Real Maritime Weddings: Isabelle & Sébastien in Memramcook, NB

I received this Memramcook wedding from Moncton photographer Philip Boudreau, and I loved this couple’s style and the classic beauty of their day. What really blew me away, though, was the incredible, glamourous decor for their reception at the Memramcook Institute, and it turns out, it was the bride’s mother who did this wonderful work! Bride Isabelle says:

“My mom works in the wedding industry as a decorator. She had planned the whole thing and all I knew were the colors (black and white). She wanted to keep it a surprise. When I entered the room it was everything I imagined and more. I had been at the venue numerous times before but never seen it look so amazing.”

Sparkle Bridal Boutique in Fredericton Closing; Other Boutiques to the Rescue

Yesterday morning New Brunswick’s The Daily Gleaner ran a story about poor customer service experiences at Sparkle Bridal Boutique followed a sudden closure of the store, and resulted in a crowd of brides and police gathered outside, looking for answers about the status of their orders. As one of the affected customers, I went to the boutique myself, and I’m afraid I came away not much more informed about what exactly has happened. All the same, anyone who has purchased a dress through Sparkle Bridal Boutique is encouraged to get in touch with them ASAP to find out the status of your order. In happier news, numerous other bridal shops have stepped up to the plate to help:

The Wedding Chapel Bridal Boutique, Oromocto NB
“We’re to help if anyone needs dresses, guidance or HUGS (I’m not joking… this is clearly NOT anything to joke about and lots were given already today!!!) We have LOTS of off the rack gowns, and I ordered 15 more today to add to our sale selection for prom and bridal! We’ve been in business for 19 years this June and service and happy brides means everything to us!!!!!!! 506-357-8184 Erika, Tia, Teresa”

Lockhart’s Weddings & Special Occasions, Sussex NB
“Lockhart’s has been working with suppliers to fulfil many orders for brides, bridesmaids, and prom customers who have been left not knowing the status of their gowns and are making many situations much less stressful. 888-235-7888”

Heavenly Gowns Bridal Boutique & Formal Wear, Saint John NB
“If you have ordered any Alfred Angelo design from the Fredericton bridal boutique that has closed, Heavenly Gowns can bring your order in for you. Please contact us at 506-652-9900 to discuss your options. We have been in contact with the designer and have already made some brides very happy.”

Carousel Bridal, Rothesay NB
“Carousel Bridal has been in contact and dealing with the suppliers, such as…Maggie Sottero, Alfred Angelo and Alyce to fulfil the many orders for brides, bridesmaids, and prom girls. We hope to lessen the stress of this unfortunate situation. Thank you. 506-847-5311.”

Bella Promessa Bridal & Formal Wear, Moncton NB
“We have already been in touch with many suppliers, and have committed to doing everything that we can to assist customers affected by this situation. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your options and see how we (or other stores) may be able to help.”

ACS Formals, Riverview NB
“Give us a call (506) 386-3889. We’re glad to help and there’s always a solution at ACS Formals! We may even be able to ship your dresses in if they were already ordered by that shop, and if they weren’t, there’s still time to order. Ask us about quick delivery dates or in-stock options! XO Amanda and Johan”

Planning a Maritime Wedding

Planning a Maritime Wedding

So a funny thing happened shortly after I finally tried to launch this blog: I got engaged. Then my cat died. And whoosh, all my attention went elsewhere. It helped that photographers were not sending me weddings to feature, and this little pipe dream of a blog fell quietly by the wayside. I’m sorry about that. Then I realized: what better time to be writing a blog about planning a wedding than… um, when I’m planning a wedding?

In the three months since becoming engaged, my fiancé and I have:

  • chosen a date
  • secured a venue
  • hired a photographer
  • picked “the colours”
  • hired caterers and done a taste-testing
  • tasted wines and ordered them
  • hired a day-of coordinator
  • hired a hair & make-up person
  • gone outfit shopping (I’ve ordered my dress, he’s still looking)
  • ordered and mailed out save the dates
  • found an officiant
  • bought his ring and my wedding jewelry
  • made a wedding website
  • started working on the playlist

Phew! It’s been a whirlwind. Friends have commented on how “on the ball” I’ve been, and I just keep saying: “weddings are literally my job! We knew what we wanted!” And there’s been a bit of luck involved, too. So now, what I’m going to try to do, is share this process with you! Tally ho.

Real Maritime Weddings: Courtney & Andrew in Magaguadavic, NB

A rustic ‘down home’ wedding in the heart of New Brunswick – shot by Fredericton wedding photographer Kandise Brown.
Bride Courtney writes There were so many family members and friends that chipped in time, talents, and energy to help us get the wedding and reception, as well as the events the days before and after, off the ground. We really couldn’t have done it without those many helping hands.

Music Notes from Amy: A Celtic Wedding on the River

Maritime Weddings in New Brunswick, Canada

Megan & Chris wanted their wedding near Fredericton, New Brunswick to have a bit of a Celtic touch, and what better way to do that than with music! They were married in a lovely country church in New Maryland, NB, followed by a reception at The Riverside Resort on the St. John River.

I played Celtic music (on solo guitar) for the prelude, wedding and reception with the bridesmaids walking to Neil Flaherty’s Drake and the bride (who looked absolutely radiant) to a folk version of Here Comes The Bride.

At the resort, everything was beautifully decorated by Nancy Curtis of Perfect Parties by Nancy in a white on white theme. It was great to meet her and her team – they paid so much attention to every detail! Congrats to the couple!

Rustic Wedding Retreats

Maritime Wedding Venues

The natural beauty of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI makes the Maritimes the perfect place to get married (at least, as long as the weather cooperates!). If you are looking for a Down East wedding venue that celebrates the great outdoors, here are five suggestions for back-to-nature, rustic wedding venues that feature beautiful landscapes, barns and farmhouses.

The Second Paradise Retreat, near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia: I played at a wedding here in 2009 and this hidden gem really caught my attention. Secluded, farmhouse-like cottages, acres of green meadows and a boathouse are just some of the features.

The Carriage House, New London, PEI: This little out-of-the way place on Prince Edward Island’s North Shore seems miles away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Shobac Cottages and Barn, near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia: Whenever someone asks me where one can rent a barn for a wedding in Nova Scotia I point them to Shobac Cottages. Their barn is huge, octagonal and absolutely stunning – and the modern architecture of the cottages make this rustic retreat unique.

The Music Barn, Sackville, New Brunswick: Speaking of barns, this music venue also doubles as a wedding reception hall. Located less than an hour outside of Moncton, it seats up to 300 theatre-style.

Trout Point Lodge, 45 minutes from Shelburne, Nova Scotia: This year-round luxury lodge is as deep into the Nova Scotian wilderness as one can get! But they have everything one would need for a lovely, small wedding including on-site gourmet catering.
